Prayer for the New Year

Priestly Blessing

May you find the courage to apologize to those you may have hurt with words or deeds.

May you find the courage to apologize to God for mistakes you may have made either intentionally or unintentionally

May you be imbued with the wisdom to understand why you made those mistakes

And may you find the strength to utilize that understanding in order to

Learn how to never repeat those same mistakes again.

Prayer to Extinguish Hate

Abraham Joshua Heschel
Selma March March 21, 1965 – Photo from Jewish Women’s Archive

Dear Creator of All Things Great and Small,

You see everything transpiring on our little planet

Every moment

Of every day.

You see the hate growing

Spreading like wildfire

Consuming everything and everyone in its path.

You have witnessed time and time again this very same hate nearly destroy the Jewish people only 72 years ago

And yet . . . as the survivors of that hatefest return to You in the heavenly heights,

That very same hate that grew in the hearts of that generation has been reborn in the hearts of this one.

Radical Islamists in Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, and worldwide seek not just our destruction, but the destruction of all peoples who dare not agree with their religious and cultural philosophy, so they hate and they teach their children to hate.

Leftist liberal groups who have decided to swallow hook, line and sinker the false histories and narratives taught by anti-Israel, anti-Semitic professors worldwide now hate and are teaching their children to hate.

Our black friends, neighbors and relatives with whom we marched in 1965 to protest hate and discrimination are now standing against us merely because we want to continue to live in our very own homeland: Israel.

God, You know our hearts.

You know that we, The Jewish People, just want peace on Earth,

We want nothing more than to live alongside our neighbors in harmony

You know that we don’t care what religion, skin color or sexual preference our neighbors may be.

You know that we recognize with complete clarity of vision that we are all Your children,

That we are all connected to You,

For You are the Creator of us all,

Therefore, God, we stand here before with our heads bowed low humbly asking that You pull the hate from the hearts of all those who have chosen to hate us.

And we ask that You show us what we may do in order to teach kindness, love, and peaceful coexistence, because we learned in World War II that you walk beside us, but that we must lift up our hands, our pens, and our feet in order to be the creators of change;

For You know that each of us bleed the same color: RED.

You know that each of us breathe the same thing: OXYGEN.

You know that each of us nourish our bodies with the same things: FOOD AND WATER.

Thus, we ask that You help us extinguish hate once and for all, such that

The hearts of every man, woman and child on Planet Earth may finally beat as one.

Amen

The Grief Gratitude Prayer

20161113_153835

Dear God,

Thank you for the time You gave me with <LOVED ONE’S NAME>.

I always knew how lucky I was to have had the opportunity to share my life with <LOVED ONE’S NAME>.

But with him/her residing with You in the heavens, nearly every day something seems to remind me of  <LOVED ONE’S NAME>.

And every time I begin to get that melancholy feeling,

When I turn to You in prayer,

You help the pain go away

And turn the tables on my heart

By opening my eyes to the blessing of each memory, and each moment I had with <LOVED ONE’S NAME>.

Thank You, God, for  every memory,

Every feeling,

Every prayer,

Every turned heart table.

You are the Memory Maker, the Healer, the Creator of all Blessings,

For all these blessings, and every other blessing of which I am unaware,

I thank you now until the end of time.

Hide & Seek

20150826_091642

Dear Creator of All That Was, Is, and Ever Will Be,

Every day we see how so many have turned away from You,

Ignoring every one of Your sunrises and sunsets,

Ignoring the importance of every bird, bug and bee that You’ve gifted us with,

Ignoring Your blessings both knowable and unknowable,

As if You and all Your blessings are hidden.

Dear God, we ask that You open the heart and soul of every human being who has turned away from You,

Help them seek and find You

And Your many blessings,

So they may discover Your love, light and healing,

And the holiness of all life,

Such that humanity seeks and finds only peace with one another,

With every bird, bug and bee,

And within every sunrise and sunset.

With humble grace and thanks in our hearts, we thank You;

And together we say:

Amen.

Prayer for Strength

Praying hands

Dear Lord,

As we stand here before You

We thank You for every blessing that You bestow

Upon us and our loved ones each and every day.

With humble grace in our hearts

We ask that You continue to bestow these beautiful blessings upon us,

And we ask that You strengthen us and our beloved <name>

For <name> is struggling with the challenges that are meeting him/her these days.

For listening to our prayer,

And knowing how best to answer us,

We thank You.

And together we say:

Amen.

Dear God, Help Us

headstones-desecrated

Dear God,

In the last two days, hundreds of headstones were desecrated in a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia;

Amazon refused to stop selling books that promote Holocaust denial;

The Palestinian Ambassador to Iran Salah Zawawi prayed that Iran produce 1000 nuclear bombs to “defend the Islamic Republic and its principles.”

Hamas shot rockets into Israel and Israel retaliated;

More people became refugees;

While many in the countries seeking to help the refugees became their victims.

Dear God, help us.

Humanity has fallen, yet again, into a deep, dark pit of hate and disrespect.

Please, God, lift that hate and disrespect from every heart.

Fill each heart with love

Now, before we destroy ourselves

And Planet Earth along the way.

Please . . .

God . . .

Help . . .

Us . . .

Amen.
